Nigeria has made strides in advancing gender equality through legal frameworks like the National Gender Policy and international agreements such as CEDAW. However, significant challenges persist, including gaps in policy implementation, entrenched patriarchal norms, and insufficient resources. Despite policies like the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP) of 2015, which aims to combat gender-based violence, full nationwide enforcement is still lacking. Awareness and education on gender issues also remain low, impeding progress. Nevertheless, initiatives like the Women’s Voice and Leadership (WVL) project, funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by ActionAid Nigeria, have been instrumental in strengthening women’s rights organizations, advocating for gender equality, and promoting women’s participation in governance and decision-making processes.
