Women in Nigeria have historically faced significant barriers to political participation, with cultural norms, economic challenges, and discriminatory practices leading to under-representation in leadership positions. Despite comprising nearly half of the population, women hold only a small fraction of elected seats at all levels of government. The Women’s Voice and Leadership-Nigeria (WVL-Nigeria) project, from 2020 to 2024, has made significant strides in improving women’s political participation through advocacy, capacity building, and policy reforms. The project supported the appointment of 12 women to key political roles and helped 40 women win electoral seats. It also facilitated the induction of 190 women into traditional councils and enabled 17,296 women to collect their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs). Furthermore, the project’s mentorship initiatives empowered young women in leadership, with notable successes in student governance across various states.
